Yellow Sapphire

Rough Yellow Sapphire

Originating from perhaps the most famous of the precious gem families, Yellow Sapphire is part of the Corundum species – another member of which is the famous Ruby gem material. ‘Sapphire’ is the simple greek translation of ‘blue’, however, to be clear any color of Corundum, other than Red (which is labeled Ruby) is called a ‘Sapphire’.

Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September, and can be used as a wedding anniversary stone to celebrate 5, 45 and 70 years of marriage.

Yellow Sapphire has been used as the Zodiac stone for Taurus, and is thought to convey the mythical trait of ‘Loyalty’. Yellow Sapphire in particular is thought to have many mystical properties and is highly valued in the Hindu faith.

The Yellow color in Yellow Sapphire comes from the presence of Iron and other trace elements as part of its chemical composition.

It is important to note that natural Sapphire is frequently subjected to various enhancement treatments, particularly heating or Berrylium treatments to produce vivid colors. Sapphire is also one of the commonly synthesized gem materials with a myriad of colors being produced. Synthetic materials are produced at a fraction of the cost per carat compared to prices of natural Sapphire gem material. These price differences are not always passed on to unsuspecting consumers. At Blossom we make every effort to identify treated natural materials and highlight this in our product detail descriptions.

Important locations from which Sapphire is sourced include Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, Australia, India, USA, Brazil, Cambodia, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Blossomjewels typically sources its Yellow Sapphire from India, Madagascar and/or Sri Lanka.

Sapphire is very hard with a Mohs’ hardness rating of 9/10. This is one reason that corundum that is not of gem quality is often processed for use in gem cutting and polishing materials for use with gem materials other than Diamond (which has a Mohs’ hardness rating of 10).
